All seals on the sandbar had been flushed before our scheduled walk. ~40 were swimming and another 20 were hauled out on the rocks near shore. | Saturday, February 17, 2018 | 80 harbor seals hauled out during monitoring session at 11:25 AM. Unfortunately, by the time we returned after 1:00 PM, all the seals were flushed from the haul-out site and about 12 were swimming in the area. People were too close to the water and many were allowing their dogs to run up and down the beach. Not only is this disturbing to the seals, it's against the law. Unfortunately, by the time we returned after 1:00 PM, all the seals were flushed from the haul-out site and about 25 were swimming in the area. | Saturday, February 24, 2018 | 107 harbor seals hauled out during monitoring session. We saw an estimated 120 from far away, but just as we got arrived, something (not us) had triggered seals to go into the water. We dropped on our knees and waited quietly up on the bluff and were able to watch almost all return over the next 25 minutes. This is a sight that very few people have the privilege of seeing. | Saturday, April 28, 2018 | 60 harbor seals hauled out on sandbar early (at 9:30 AM) during research observations. No photos were taken due to the dense fog. Despite the dense fog, a vessel (named Susan Anne) approach the seals and flushed them from the sandbar (a violation of NY and federal law). As the seal-walk group arrived at midday, the fog began to lift. No seals were hauled out, but several were seen feeding on bunker. Not many seals, but an amazing view of feeding.
