Profile

The mission of Community Church UU is to grow as a caring, justice-making, anti-racist, diverse, spiritual community.

WHAT IS UNITARIAN UNIVERSALISM?

At CCNYUU they believe in seven principles:

- The inherent worth and dignity of every person;

- Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;

- Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in their congregations;

- A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;

- The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within their congregations and in society at large;

- The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;

- Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

They draw from many sources:

- Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves them to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life;

- Words and deeds of prophetic women and men which challenge them to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love;

- Wisdom from the world's religions which inspires them in our ethical and spiritual life;

- Jewish and Christian teachings which call them to respond to God's love by loving our neighbors as ourselves;

- Humanist teachings which counsel them to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science, and warn against idolatries of the mind and spirit.

- Spiritual teachings of earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.

HOLIDAYS

Community Church celebrates many holidays from many different religious traditions at Community Church including Juneteenth, Summer Solstice, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanza, Passover, Easter, and Winter Solstice.

PROGRAMS

Community Care Team: sign up to bring care and joy to members of the community who are struggling. If you are in need of some extra support contact caring@ccny.org and someone from the Community Care Team will reach out to you.

Fellowship Hour: meet in the Assembly Hall on Sundays after the service for bagels, coffee, and community!

Secular Humanist Society of NY Book Club, first Thursdays at 7-8:30pm in the Assembly Hall. The book club is open to all and free! See www.shsny.org for upcoming titles.

Young Adult Earth Discussion Group, first Thursdays at 7pm in the Chapel: Monthly meeting of the Young Adult Discussion Group (18-35 years old). Come talk about your beliefs and how they relate to the Earth and Earth centered traditions. Child care on request.

Programs for children and youth are designed to uplift and empower, and to replace fear of the unknown, with teachings about all the different ways there are of being in the world. With spiritual grounding, concrete knowledge, and space for questioning, our young people learn to celebrate the strength in diversity, and to recognize the positive power of community.

Volunteer Choir, rehearsals Sundays 12:45pm, Hall of Worship.

NYC Street Singers, Tuesdays 7pm, 3rd Floor room.

Helene and BJ's Place, Community Men's Shelter: CCNY provides temporary shelter to up to 10 unhoused men in one of their buildings. To get involved in this important work, join the shelter service committee by going to the Welcome Table after the service.

United Nations Global Affairs Program, UU organizing for the UN: The program hosts initiatives in support of global multilateralism and the UN's three pillars of work - human rights, development, peace and security.

The John Haynes Holmes Scholarship Fund.

The Ethelwyn Doolittle Justice and Outreach Fund.
