BJL Appraisal's expertise spans a broad range of fine and decorative art, including rugs, ceramics, silver, fine art paintings, sculpture and prints, antique, mid-century and modern furniture, collectible and estate jewelry. TYPES OF APPRAISALS

TRUSTS & ESTATES / EQUITABLE DISTRIBUTION: Essential for Internal Revenue Service filing requirements, probate reporting and equitable distribution among heirs.

NON-CASH CHARITABLE DONATION: Required by the Internal Revenue Service when a gift of one or more like items valued at $5,000 and above is donated to a qualified non-profit organization. Items must be appraised by a “qualified appraiser” as defined by the IRS.

INSURANCE: To protect your investment if your valuables are lost or damaged, or during a move. The appraisal should be updated every three to five years due to fluctuations in the marketplace.

DAMAGE OR LOSS: Required by insurance carriers when there is a total or partial loss to property.

DIVORCE OR SALE OF A BUSINESS: To ensure equitable division of property.

LIQUIDATION, BANKRUPTCY OR SECURED LOAN.

RESALE: Recommended when selling art, antiques or collectibles in order to select the appropriate sale venue and set an appropriate price or auction estimate.

THE PROCESS

After determining the purpose and scope of the appraisal, BJL Appraisal will determine the appropriate valuation approach and provide an estimate of the fee. A full onsite inspection is performed to examine, measure and photograph each object. Combined with their own expertise, research is conducted through on-line, gallery and academic sources to determine comparable values and their findings are analyzed and written up into a comprehensive report.

FEES

Their compensation is based on an hourly rate and never contingent on reported values.

IMPARTIALITY

Their appraisals meet IRS and Insurance Industry Standards and are highly detailed and thoroughly researched. They adhere to all applicable professional standards. Value conclusions are determined employing the Uniform Standards of Appraisal Practice (USPAP), and are in accordance with the Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct of the Appraisers Association of America (AAA).

They can arrange conservation, cleaning, reframing and installation. They can assist with insurance appraisals, deaccession, donations, loans, authentication and research.

ABOUT THE FOUNDER, BARBARA J. LUBITZ

Appraisal Background

Principal and founder of BJL Appraisal, Barbara Jo Lubitz earned her certificates in Appraisal Studies and Art Business at New York University. Ms. Lubitz has completed appraisals covering a broad spectrum of antiques, fine art and prints, silver, oriental rugs, African art, ceramics and jewelry. She recently completed the appraisal and disposition of several large estates, as well as appraisals for donations to several museums of over 300 works of fine art for a major public company and has appraised an artist’s estate consisting of over 1400 works. Ms. Lubitz regularly attends local auctions in order to have the most up-to-date pricing on everything from valuable paintings and antiques to regular household items. She continues to take specialist courses and regularly attends appraisal and professional conferences to further her connoisseurship and stay current on the latest developments and regulations in the industry.

Legal Expertise

With a law degree from Cornell Law School, Ms. Lubitz brings legal/business acumen to the appraisal field developed through a 20-year career as a corporate/banking attorney in the financial services industry. This experience strengthens her ability to assess the marketplace, value each item appropriately and understand the complex legal nuances involved in IRS appraisals.

Professional Associations

Ms. Lubitz is a member of the American Ceramics Circle, The Glass Forum, the French Porcelain Society, the American Association of Museums, the Connecticut Ceramics Study Circle and the Professional Organization of Women in the Arts. She has participated in appraisal events for several charitable organizations, including the Milburn Library, Milburn, NJ, Hill-Stead House Museum in Farmington, CT and the Pequot Library in Southport, CT. Ms. Lubitz has participated in countless auctions over the years, including as a consultant to Phillips and Heritage Auctions in New York.

Ms. Lubitz is an associate of the Appraisers Association of America, and a candidate for accredited membership. She is also a member of the American Association of Museums and is USPAP-compliant.
